Book nowSouth Devon coasteering is our most popular activity for people looking for a real challenge with plenty of adrenaline. Put simply, coasteering is about exploring the coastline by traversing rocks, jumping from cliffs and ledges, wild swimming through swell and channels, plus much more.
Do I need to know how to swim to go coasteering?
Because you’ll be covered from head to toe in neoprene and have a high-quality buoyancy aid, you’ll float really well. If you are a complete novice to swimming (literally cannot swim, especially in open water) we’d recommend joining us on our Salcombe Coasteering Experience first where the water is more sheltered, there is less swimming involved, and plenty of places to get out.
What shoes should I wear coasteering?
We highly recommend that you bring a pair of trainers/walking shoes and that they have laces and a decent sole, and they are not completely ruined already. Because of the nature of the environment, we’ll be traversing over uneven rocky ground which is sometimes slippery, a good pair of trainers or walking shoes will provide the best stability for these conditions. Neoprene rock shoes without laces or pull cords are not recommended.
Do I have to do any of the jumps?
In a nutshell, no! The big attraction of coasteering is definitely the jumping aspect, however there is so much more to explore with coasteering than just the jumping. We don’t pressure anyone into doing anything they don’t want to, it’s all challenge by choice, as we like to say, and jumping is always optional.
Can I wear my own wetsuit?
Yes, absolutely you can. However, it must be a long sleeve wetsuit and ideally 5mm, especially if it’s for a child.
How physical is coasteering?
Both our coasteering experiences start with a short hike to our starting location. Our Salcombe coasteering offers plenty of opportunities to get out of the water and walk if swimming becomes too tiring. Gara Rock presents a more challenging experience with more time in the water, but it’s still accessible to most fitness levels and swimming abilities. If you have had any recent operations or health problems, we strongly advise you to consult your doctor before coasteering.
Can I bring a GoPro?
Yes, by all means. However, Adventure South are not responsible for it at any point. We recommend a chest harness, and not jumping with it in your hand or attached to you.

"Thanks Scott and Connor who were our guides yesterday, for a great time coasteering. My nerves have just about recovered! Kids all loved it (10-14 years, all strong swimmers). The guides were very encouraging and looked after us all. Completely terrifying but loved it!"

"Slightly scarier & colder than I imagined, but amazing experience and we were definitely in safe hands.. It was great to see the coastline from a different perspective and learn a little history too. Thanks again"
