One of the most exhilarating natural experiences in South Devon, but don't just take our word for it. Gara Rock Coasteering offers an unforgettable day out.
For a truly unique coasteering experience, head to Gara Rock for a day exploring some of the region’s most dramatic coastline. Perfect for adventurous couples, groups and families with older children, our expert guides will have you wild swimming through natural canyons and gullies, climbing rocky outcrops and jumping from ledges and cliffs.
One of Devon’s best coasteering locations, Gara Rock has it all for anyone looking for an adrenaline-fuelled day out, big jumps, epic scenery, channels and caves to explore, and wild swimming in hidden coves.
Come and test your comfort zone with this truly unique adventure start to finish. We can tailor the activity to fit the needs of your group. Depending on what you’re looking for we can explore channels and scrabble rocks with a slow and relaxed approach, or if you’re seeking adrenaline, we’ll find the best jumps and swell to play in.
Book NowCoasteering is our most popular activity for people looking for a real challenge with plenty of adrenaline. Put simply, coasteering is about exploring the coastline by traversing rocks, jumping from cliffs and ledges, wild swimming through swell and channels, plus much more.
The meeting point for this activity is the Gara Rock field car park, just opposite the Gara Rock Hotel. Please note, there is a £2 charge for parking (cash only). On arrival, follow the track towards the sea until you see the Adventure South vehicle.
Gara Rock is an isolated place with single track roads for part of the way, during busy seasons (June-September) and roads can become congested. We suggest leaving plenty of journey time before you set off. Alternatively, consider taking the passenger ferry from Salcombe to East Portlemouth and make the 20 minute walk inland to Gara Rock.
Do I need to know how to swim to go coasteering?
Because you’ll be covered from head to toe in neoprene and have a high-quality buoyancy aid, you’ll float really well. If you are a complete novice to swimming (literally cannot swim, especially in open water) we’d recommend joining us on our Salcombe Coasteering Experience first where the water is more sheltered, there is less swimming involved, and plenty of places to get out.
Do I have to do any of the jumps?
In a nutshell, no! The big attraction of coasteering is definitely the jumping aspect, however, there is so much more to explore with coasteering than just the jumping. We don’t pressure anyone into doing anything they don’t want to, it’s all challenge by choice, as we like to say, and jumping is always optional.
What shoes should I wear coasteering?
We highly recommend that you bring a pair of trainers/walking shoes and that they have laces and a good sole, and they are not completely ruined already. Because of the nature of the environment, we’ll be traversing over uneven rocky ground which is sometimes slippery, a good pair of trainers or walking shoes will provide the best stability for these conditions. Neoprene rock shoes without laces or pull cords are not recommended.
Can I wear my own wetsuit?
Yes, absolutely you can. However, it must be a long sleeve wetsuit and ideally 5mm, especially if its for a child. Yes, absolutely you can. However, it must be a long sleeve wetsuit and ideally 5mm, especially if its for a child.
How physical is the Gara Rock Coasteering Experience?
Gara Rock requires a moderate - good level of fitness. From the car park, there is a 1k hike down to the start point, and a 2/3k hike along the stunning coastal path. Once you’re in the water depending on what the swell is doing that day will determine how physical the swim will be. If you have had any recent operations or have struggled with health problems recently, we’d recommend not coasteering until you’ve consulted a doctor.
Can I bring a GoPro?
Yes, be all means. However, Adventure South are not responsible for it at any point. We recommend a chest harness, and not jumping with it in your hand or attached to you.
If you love the sound of coasteering, but feel our Gara Rock experience isn’t quite right for you, check out our Salcombe coasteering experience. Less adrenaline-fuelled and more explorative, it’s the perfect introduction to coasteering.

"We had a fantastic few hour with the lads at Adventure South recently in Salcombe. Just the right level of dare devilling for all the family aged between 14-55yrs! Something new for us all to try and we had a blast, will definitely want to try out the Gara Rock experience next time we are in town."

"Thanks Scott and Connor who were our guides yesterday, for a great time coasteering. My nerves have just about recovered! Kids all loved it (10-14 years, all strong swimmers). The guides were very encouraging and looked after us all. Completely terrifying but loved it!"
