Perfect for beginners, friends and families, a day exploring this beautiful coastline ranks among the best things to do in Salcombe.
Our Salcombe coasteering experience is the perfect introduction to the world of coasteering. With a focus on exploring, advenutre and play, Salcombe Coasteeringis the ultimate place for families and groups to get to grips with this awesome coastal experience .
Salcombe is a great place for coasteering. There are hidden caves, channels to scramble through, beaches to explore and of course plenty of jumping. This activity is ideal for anyone new to coasteering and families with younger members, but also offers a great all-round coasteering experience.
A short walk from North Sands, Salcombe Coasteering offers a more relaxed form of coasteering but still with the chance to push your comfort zone. There are jumps up to 5 meters with many natural features that we can pick and choose from, such as gullies, channels, caves and rocky ledges.
Book NowCoasteering is coastal-based, adrenaline fuelled challenge. Put simply, coasteering is about exploring the coastline by traversing rocks, jumping from cliffs and ledges, wild swimming through swell and channels, plus much more.
The meeting point for Salcombe coasteering is North Sands car park next to The Winking Prawn. A member of the Adventure South team will be waiting on the sea-wall opposite the entrance to the car park as you arrive.
The car park is pay & display, and is usually busy at weekends and in the summer, if you are staying in Salcombe we recommend walking to North Sands, or use the Park’n Ride service opposite Salcombe petrol station. if driving in from out of town. If you have to drive please leave plenty of time before your activity is due to start.
Salcombe Coasteeting benifits from being protected from prevailing South-Westerly wind and swell by lagre cliffs, meaning the sea where we go coasteering is often calm. Starting in North Sands you’ll walk a short but steep hill to South Sands, before gently entering the water to begin your adventure. You’ll swim mostly short distances of 10-20 metres before climbing out onto rocks. The journey is roughly 1k on the water with much of that walking over rocks.
We only recommend joining us if you can swim. If you’re not an overly confident or strong swimmer the slower pace of Salcombe Coasteering and protection make it perfect for anyone new to the activity.
Do I need to know how to swim to go coasteering?
Because you’ll be covered from head to toe in neoprene and have a high-quality buoyancy aid, you’ll float really well. The Salcombe coastline is sheltered and there is less swimming involved than our Gara Rock experience and plenty of places to get out.
What shoes should I wear coasteering?
We highly recommend that you bring a pair of trainers/walking shoes and that they have laces and a good sole and they are not completely ruined already. Because of the nature of the environment, we’ll be traversing over uneven rocky ground which is sometimes slippery, a good pair of trainers or walking shoes will provide the best stability for these conditions. Neoprene rock shoes without laces or pull cords are not recommended.
What if the weather is too bad on the day?
We will always endeavour to give you as much warning as possible, days in advance if we think the weather is going to turn against us on the day. Should we have to cancel on the day due to bad weather, we can offer to either reschedule you for another day, offer a gift voucher, or provide a full refund.
Do I have to do any of the jumps?
In a nutshell, no! The big attraction of coasteering is definitely the jumping aspect, however, there is so much more to explore with coasteering than just the jumping. We don’t pressure anyone into doing anything they don’t want to, it’s all challenge by choice, as we like to say, and jumping is always optional.
Can I wear my own wetsuit?
Yes, absolutely you can. However, it must be a long sleeve wetsuit and ideally 5mm, especially if its for a child.
How physical is the Salcombe Coasteering Experience?
From North Sands, there is a 5-minute hike up and over the hill to South Sands before we start coasteering. Once coasteering, there are lots of places to get out of the water and walk if swimming becomes too tiring. If you have had any recent operations or have struggled with health problems recently, we’d recommend consulting a doctor before coasteering.
Can I bring a GoPro?
Yes, be all means. However, Adventure South are not responsible for it at any point. We recommend a chest harness, and not jumping with it in your hand or attached to you.
If you love the sound of coasteering, but want to turn the adrenaline up a few levels, check out our Gara Rock Coasteering Experience. With bigger jumps, more swell and dramatic coastline, it’s perfect for adult groups and older children.
"Refreshing, invigorating and fun. Our guides were brilliant, kids loved jumping off the rocks and a few fears were conquered. Really recommend this activity."

"This was the best thing we did all week with our two children (aged 10 and 12). Corey and Connor were both fantastic hosts, putting everyone at ease. They made it fun and exciting. Our children wanted us to rebook it as soon as it was over. We will definitely be back!"

"Slightly scarier & colder than I imagined, but amazing experience and we were definitely in safe hands.. It was great to see the coastline from a different perspective and learn a little history too. Thanks again"
